It doesn’t matter if you have a high-paying job or a low-paying job, if you're looking for a new job, or if you're trying to establish a network of contacts. If you ever want to participate in a business meal, you need to have some basic knowledge about the subject.
Business Meal Etiquette is a collection of business dos and don’ts intended to make your business meals as pleasant as possible. If you follow these, you should make a good impression on whoever you are meeting.
Below are seven points to help navigate your business meal smoothly.
1. R.S.V.P.
If you receive an invitation to a business meal, it's courteous to respond promptly. However, if you wait longer than one week, it might look like you're holding out for a more attractive option.
2. Do arrive on time.
Arriving on time shows that you value your host time and your time.
3. Remember the 'BMW' rule.
B: Bread is always on the left, M: Meal is always in the middle, and W: water is always on the right.
4. Place your napkin in your lap.
Open your napkin and place it on your lap when you sit down. If you have to excuse yourself to make a phone call, put it on your chair. At the end of the meal, place it neatly on the table, to the left of your plate.
5. Know which utensils to use.
Each course should have its utensils, and an excellent general rule is to start with silverware on the outside and work your way in as the meal goes on.
6. The host should always pay the bill regardless of gender or rank.
7. Do not rush to talk about business; let your host have the liberty to do so. If you are the host, it's better to speak business through the meal's end during coffee time.
